I don't really have any snacks for the evening - I was going to order in for dinner, but forgot that I had a steak defrosting (it was supposed to be warm enough to grill, but that wasn't the case). There are brownies from yesterday - I had mine already :(

So far my favorite dress is Reese Witherspoon - it's a very pretty purple number. Ryan Seacrest is an idiot, by the way.

Nicole Kidman didn't learn from Charlize Theron's fashion mistake last year, which was "don't put a big weird shaped thing that might be mistaken for a second mutant head on the one shoulder of your one shouldered gown."
Argghh.
The sore throat is so icky that chocolate is right out.
Too scratchy.
It's time for more tea.
...walks off coughing some more, and faintly sloshing...

Oh, and do I have to actually *watch* the show to join in?

rofl. and i'm missing this? i'm sure pictures will be online tomorrow. i'll look for a picture of her.
I didn't see Keith with her - is that a sign? She dressed better when she was with the Weirdo.
No, lauowolf, join in, we'll tell you what you're missing.

Well, if they had to do a m ontage, that's not a bad start for the pre-show.

Did you get the Happy Feet beginning?
Leo is hoping no one will mistake him for one of the penguins in the clip. Perhaps he shouldn't have slicked his hair back quite so severely.
Could Naomi Watt's dress look *more* like it's going to fall off? But that's a nice color on Nicole Kidman, despite the second head and the collar that makes her real head look like it's screwed on with bolts.
I had a dress like Lisa Ling's - in 10th grade!

Yes, and I loved Happy Feet. So I'm not too cranky yet.

I think Jennifer Hudson raided Ming the Merciless's closet for that gold semi-jacket.
Mmmm, choco with chili and cinnamon! I just turned it on but seeing as where I'm a total ignoramus when it comes to celeb stuff, I won't know who I'm looking at most of the time.
I'm glad the announcer's introducing people to the camera, because I'd miss a few, too. Clearly strapless is the bandwagon everyone's jumping on tonight.
I'm looking at a red costumer designer. What a fright.
Tomorrow's going to be all about how the "big girl" had to look extra-hard for her outfit. grumble grumble
Thank god for commercials. I actually need scissors to get into The Dark Fire.
I found that to be frightening as well. My roommate just came in from making an ice cream run to 7-11 and said "Jesus" when he saw her!
I'm going to have www.imdb.com open for reference, BTW.
Some of the "big girls" have looked great in the past. Queen Latifah, for one. And everyone's clamoring to dress J. Hudson, because she's gonna get so much camera time.
Nerd alert! I love the guys with the briefcases.
Ooooh, the color of Jada's gown!
Thank god Andre Leon Talley went shopping with her :)
As a "big girl," I take special note of the comments made about them after the shows. It's like Hollywood can't handle anyone over a size 10.
The Smiths are a good looking bunch.
I like Cameron Diaz's gown. Eddie Murphy's date's dress leaves something to be desired. Like, a color.
Yah, they were cute! Happy and proud!

I love Will Smith.
My question is when Scary Spice's baby is due and she can prove that Eddie's the father and he'll look like an idiot for dumping her.
I've seen all the Best Picture noms except Departed. And when I saw Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scotland, I promptly forgot who else was even nominated for Best Actor.
CATE BLANCHETT IS BEAUTIFUL!!!
Who's this guy asking the questions about dresses?
I also love Will Smith. Missed this movie though.
Awww he's got his mom there. Sweet.
He's the fashion guru for Vogue magazine.
Was that Reese Witherspoon in black just before we went to commercial? She looked very good.
Where was Ryan's girlfriend? I'm always wondering about peoples' dates.
I haven't seen a single one of these movies. LOL! I guess I do know most of the faces but the movies are a blur.
yep, but it's actually a really dark purple - it gets a little lighter towards the bottom (mermaid tale, different shades of purple)
Cate Blanchett always looks beautiful.
Thank for mute on the commercials.

Best Picture noms except Departed. And when I saw Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scotland, I promptly forgot who else was even n

the departed was great.. you need to see that.

hilarious comment about eddie murphy's date's dress.
Marky Mark! I loved him in Three Kings.
Mark Wahlberg is so handsome - and a surprisingly good actor.
Three Kings is one of my all-time favorites!
I want to see Children of Men again for that bombed out urban warfare sequence on the big screen.
Kate Winslett is so classy...

Is that Lisa Ling in the black? That ponytail makes her look 12. Is she interviewing for a high school TV class?

On E!, they had a video message from Ricky Gervais to Kate Winslet - Ricky's cat said he preferred Helen Mirren and asked if Kate bought her dress at Walmart - very funny
OMG, I thought that was Mark W. but I wasn't sure! He's matured quite a bit and much for the better.

Oh, Helen Mirren--she is a queen of class!
Helen Mirren looks very elegant.
Is Channel One still on? Maybe that's what she's going for...maybe doing all that National Geographic Explorer stuff took away all her fashion sense.
That half hour went by fast. So much funner with you guys on board.
Thanks for hosting - OMG - this beginning is great!
Did Peter O'Toole get an eye lift that froze them in that permanently surprised looking state?
i don't know why, but this nominee thing is making me want to watch curb your enthusiasm..
I liked that montage. Nice idea. Especially becuse it included people who weren't world-famous.
Was that Errol Morris shooting it? It sounded like him.
Oh, didn't notice. I like his movies.

Good catch, michelle!

Bad shoes, Ellen.

I saw him speak in November - he's working on a movie about the Abu Ghraib photos - can't wait.

I wish Ellen was wearing sneakers.

Does Captain Kangaroo know she stole his jacket?

Mr. Greenjeans will be the one reading the rules about the ballots.
you could tell by his voice? that's awesome.

ellen is funny so far.. i used to enjoy her show.
I'm halfway in my pajamas. Sweatpants and my robe.
when you watch a lot of his movies, you learn to catch him
She's great. I'm laughing out loud at this monologue.
Was that bald guy Jack Nicholson? He seemed to be in the Jack Nicholson (tm) seat.
what is up with nickleson's head?

Little Miss Sunshine must win!!!
Yay on the Al Gore joke!
Holy sh*t, dbb! I was thinking the exact same thing.
Ellen just has a way of making everyone feel like a little kid. She's great.
The Smiths seem to have left their child in the coat check.
was that him?? he's bald now?? i didn't even recognize him
Gospel chorus! Amen!
The Littlest Smith is probably in the kid's room, playing with blocks and eating graham crackers.
LOL, Laurie--Captain Kangaroo! I knew it looked familiar.
lol.. that's hilarious jaypo.. for some reason i could picture him in there looking confused then swearing.. lol
Daniel Craig is beautiful. I hope he doesn't get too close to The Neck.
omg.. kidman's dress.. rofl!!
EEEEeek!! There really is a Barbie! [crosses mahself]
Does anyone else think Nicole's been Botoxing?
Everyone scrambles to find Art Direction at the bottom of their Oscar ballot at home...
WTF happened to her!? She looks fareaky.
YAY! Pan's was truly a magical film - see it if you haven't!
glad to see pan's won for that one.. some of those underworld sets looked amazing.. and that guy with the eyes in his hands was probably the creepiest thing i've ever seen.
If Pirates had to lose, I guess Pan's Labyrinth can have it.
Those Mexicans are taking all our jobs (JK!)
i wanted to see sherry baby.. the trailer looked awesome. i forgot about that movie..

*makes a note*

How can she breathe in that dress? I can't breathe looking at it.
Wouldn't it be cool if Maggie was still wearing her tattoos from Stranger Than Fiction with that dress?
pirates should get something for having an all female cast, though...
Commercial. Cheesy poofs!
i haven't seen stranger than fiction either.. dammit.. am i going to have to pick that up this tuesday? *sigh*
Now I wish I had snacks.
20 minutes in, one award given. Yeah, this'll end on time.
Chocolate and laundry break!
Best Buy commercial, Bobavey! But no slugs!
i saw it.. haha.. they're all gone, that's why! after my post there was a rush for them..
Will Farrell's afro was nuts at the Golden Globes, but now it's out of control. This bit is great!
told you you were setting a trend.
Is that possibly Will Farrell's real hair?
This is a great number. John C. Reilly can sing!
John C. Reilly is great too - they must have gotten new writers this year (RIP, Bruce Vilanch)
I hope not.
if it is i'm so jealous!! you have no idea how much i used to want an afro..
"I hope not" re: his hair.
If they keep entertaining us like this, I barely care if they give out any awards.
He was nominated for an Oscar for Chicago
excellent.. creepy hand-eye guy ftw!!
dbb, that's a scary thought.
Wow, I'm glad they got it. I haven't seen Pan's L. but now think I may have to. I'll order the dvd for our Library. Get to see it for free :-)
Ah, found it.
One problem for me is that I saw almost none of these movies, and hardly knowwho anyone is.
So was the short guy jack black?
And who were the other two?
And why do they make them sing?
OMG, they're playing "Short People" for the kid presenters.
OMG he's adorable!!
haha.. anyone else find this hilarious? short people announcing the award for animated short?
I love animated shorts. Like children's stories, they're really hard to do well.
Both kids are cute and I usually don't have such thoughts
In height order, shortest to tallest: Jack Black, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly. The ballad of the comedians overlooked at Oscar.
The Oscar handoff was great - that kid's got a bright future
Viking.
The NFB racks up another one. Canadian newspapers have their "local interest" Oscar story.
more vikings up for this one

West Bank Story looks great!

Nicholson does not. I think he forfeits his front row seat next year.

maybe jack's bald because he wanted to upstage Djimon Hounsou?
Why aren't I seeing him? Where is he?
Chocolate. Laundry. Pass the cheesies, L.
don't worry, he'll find you!
Can't wait till Jack's hooome.
Hmmm, wonder what they're doing there while we get five minutes of commercials...
(All the glamorous types slipping off their shoes, and scratching hastily.)

Hint, jaypo, look for someone who doesn't look like Jack Nicholson.

Front row, dark glasses, bald head. Have a cheesey poof.

Oh, and we're getting snow piling up outside here in Toronto right now.

"Land of opportunity" You guys see that commercial up there? Where the people look in a mirror and see what they're NOT?
You know, Nickleson was never my kind of heart throb, but it still seems sad.
I missed the commercials because of the sound of breaking glass in the kitchen. The Roomba is now working on it.
This is soooo odd.
I want to do this.
Hahaaa! A sound effects choir! That'd be so cool and fun to do!
This thing is pretty cool - it's like they're a bunch of Bobby McFerrins!
I love Greg Kinnear (and Steve, but that's just a given).
what happened in the kitchen?

i love when the show the sound guys using the most unexpected things to make sound effects!
Who is that with Clint Eastwood? looks like Bianca Jagger.
Oh, jeez, a Scottish accent. {faints}
It's his wife - she used to be a local news person, I think

One of the cats knocked a ceramic saucer off the counter. And then because pieces of it fell behind a rolling microwave stand, Macroon was trying to get at pieces of kibble that had fallen back there in the past, now mixed with ceramic shards.

I've just finished cleaning it up. What awards did miss? I have to keep my nerdy scoresheet up to date.

marky mark was hilarious in the departed.
WOW! Eddie didn't win - did you just see that Abigail has a stuffed curious george on her lap?
I love the shot of the Oscar on the floor. Nice one, Alan. Since it'll probably wind up as a doorstop anyway.
No, that's cute!

dbb, don't let him hear you call him that...
Enjoy your moment on screen, Scorcese, you know, in case you lose again.
i *really* want to see Taxi Driver now..

oh.. laurie.. they have a listing of the awards and who's winning them on imdb, so you can reconcile your own list from there.
Interpretive dance always make me think "I am a tree, I am a tree."
Pilobolus (sp?) is awesome. Have you seen that car commercial they do?
Alec Baldwin's in the Departed? Okay, now I'm sold.
rofl..why was there a little advert for the departed?
gotta go get laundry
they're doing that for all the best picture noms

Yes, I've seen that commercial. That troupe is amazing.
oh yeah? ok..
I'm glad they're running the text from the credits of Inconvenient Truth with the song.
Leo's posse's looking a little older than usual.

Could Jerry Seinfeld look *more* bored? He's thinking, Does this mean I have to get rid of my SUV?

Thanks, peeps.
I am now god.

Sarah loves Melissa Ethridge.
Did any of you guys *hear* that WHOOP.
I think that's his mom
I'm so glad these people of international fame use their resources for uiversal causes.
I actually meant Gore. Who seems like a really good sport.
Al Gore was on Fresh Air recently and it was a really good interview - they played bits from him hosting SNL and he was really funny
sorry - the camera was just on his mom when I started typing
Laurie, I want to know what kind of cheesy things you're eating.
Somewhere today I was reading that Gore would be the perfect person to throw his hat into the ring later on, since by then everyone will be sick of hearing about the current Dem candidates, what with electioneering starting so early.
Why did Cameron dye her hair? Blonde looked so much cuter on her.
Michael Season's Lite cheese puffs. 65% less fat, wheat free, gluten free. US made, so you might be able to find them. Try Whole Foods.
i was wondering that myself.. how exactly is an award show less (or more) environtmentally friendly?

oh..and was i the only one that didn't really like cars?

Yay, Happy Feet! This is the first time in several Oscars that they didn't have Muppets or cartoon characters presenting this one.

got me, db. Maybe they give a certan percentage of proceeds to selected eco-causes.
Affleck did a good interview on Fresh Air too - getting away from J.Lo did wonders for his career
There's Laurie with her fav sentence/s of the day!
I avoided Cars. BTW, People say that the screenwriting award Affleck and Damon really belonged William Goldman, who totally rewrote them, but for no credit.
Yow, JN does look a litle fweaky.
oh man.. they need the clip from orgazmo in this montage.. "it's an action, adventure.. porno."
Scary Jack!

Even if Goldman didn't, I still would have given Damon more of the credit. Ben just seems like he's doing better, but still...
That was a great moment in Children of Men. Totally not telegraphed and unexpected.
everyone i know loved it.. i thought it was boring.. and i was very concerned about how the cars made tv's and radios..
Do we need this Chris Connelly dude at all? With his masking tape and cardboard props? What is the budget on this thing, anyway?
rofl.. this tylenol commercial..
We have the Wes Anderson American Express commercial - love it
I have no idea what this commercial is about.
Okay, right now the Canadian commercials rule. We just had one full of cats, and a surprise ending to a Kia commercial that had to be pulled because it featured a girl cop making out in a Kia with a guy she'd stopped for speeding. Same beginning, then a title that they were going to an ending suitable for all audiences, and then a goat munching in a field. Very Monty Python.
Yeah, mmb--what you said. It was just way too long for my attention span.
rotf, Laurie--great sense of humor there!
Was Ralph the Wonder Llama involved? :)

These girls look nice.
Meryl Streep - best jewelry use of a hubcap.
these costumes are stunning (well, the first ones at least). the corgi's cute
i was picturing you with your ferals, laurie..rofl.

i missed the kia one.. i was typing notes.. doh!
Why haven't I seen Prada yet? I even brought it home one weekend and never got around to it.
Corgi! They were all over in The Queen as well.
what's up with the costume people dressing like weirdoes?

Now that's a way for a woman to wear a suit.

Eeeewwwww.
Re TC, not costumes.
The Jean Hersholt, or Bathroom Break award.
this show is going to be on forever - should we call off work now, or wait until morning?
Ellen looks much nicer in the white suit.
that was pretty funny with the eastwoods
Gwynnie's dress is cool. Too bad they didn't show it full-length.
They did, from the side/back as she approached the mic. It is cool, but I don't think she has much of personal style. Grace Kelly rip off.
It's a neutral color that doesn't wash her out - Penelope Cruz's dress has that problem.
Ellen *is* good at this. I approve her for next year, too.
i love the nappy-time music they play when the speech starts to drag.. :)
Damn, those silhouette guys are good.
She's such a naturally likeable person and has a way of allowing everyone else to relax. Just a pleasant no BS person.
ellyphant!
Re eco-friendly awards.
It's a huge production event.
They run offices (supplies, lights, heating, air conditioning, shipping, waste).
They schlep hundred's of people around in limos (or not).
They feed hundreds (thousands?) of people.
And any of these can be done more thoughtfully.
hey, peeps, me getting sleppy. I'm gonna turn in. This was fun. Catch y'all tomorrow somehwere on vox or CO!

xx
jaypo

Did RD Jr. shine his shoes with his hair today?

Good points - it's easy to forget that part of it all
Yay, POTC!
g'night jaypo..

and yeah, hadn't thought of those things lauo.
"Films with subtitles were being shown in cinemas across America." And people stayed away because they didn't want to read at the movies.
was that the girl from wedding crashers laying across sacha cohen's lap??
goodnight jaypo
Bye, Jaypo! Glad you came out to play!
I missed Sacha Cohen completely.
i love foreign films.. anyone that knows me knows i've been raving about french movies recently.. they've been putting out some crazy movies.
Yeah, Ellen is good at this.
Wonder if they'll have the sense to get her again next year.
Why did they say UK for Clive, but leave out Australia for Cate?
I'd call that open-necked shirt with the tux a fashion crime on anybody else, but Clive Owen can wear whetever the hell he wants and get away with it.
it was just before they started the montage..
Whoa, crazy! No Pan's! I'd like to see the winner though
Preach on sister.

Thanks, everybody. I wasn't even going to WATCH the show but I had to. Fortunately, I tuned in just in time to see the foreign film composite and award. These are the main movies I watch, so now I have a list to catch up - since I JUST THIS WEEK bought my first DVD player. Netflix, here I come. A monster has been created...

that snakes on a plane thing was great!

Hi, AmyH!

Oh, bonus prize. Best supporting actress gets to kiss George Clooney!

Now our local news tie-in is set - and take that, Simon Cowell!
Hi Amy! Netflix is going to rule your life (in a good way).

Jennifer is the only woman alive that can resist the charms of Clooney!
omg.. that GM commercial was fantastic!
